An Old Fashioned Christmas Home Tour
In the entry, living, and dining areas this year’s theme is a modern take on a traditional Dickens Christmas.
The Entry
As you enter Storybook Cottage a pair of happy carolers greet you.
At the base of the figurines is my Grandma Jingles’ collection of antique Christmas cards. I love the vibrant colors and graphics.
The Living Room
The living room is decorated in a red, white, and green color palette.
The bar cart has been transformed with Advent candles and a German nativity scene known as a schwibbogen.
The centerpiece on the coffee table features vintage copies of A Christmas Carol and other old-fashioned touches.
This year’s tree is a swirl of tartan plaid ribbon, candles, and hand-blown ornaments all topped by Ebenezer Scrooges hat.
Faux fruit and cranberry garland nestle amongst the branches of the tree.

Decorative elements are repeated on the cheerful banister.
In the fireplace area layers of tartan and greenery continue the theme.
On the mantel, large pinecones and happy cardinals are mixed with berries and fruit.
This is right next to the dining area.
The Dining Area
The dining area also received a bit of old-fashioned flair.
The antique red glass candlesticks belonged to my husband’s great aunt.
Oranges were a delicacy in Victorian times and considered a special gift. Handmade place cards also feature a traditional Christmas menu on the back.
The Kitchen
Most of the Christmas magic happens in the kitchen which is decorated in a Nutcracker theme this year.
Most of our nutcrackers and smokers were collected while we lived in Germany.
The Christmas crackers were so fun to make.
The place settings were kept simple as this is where we eat a majority of our meals.
I found the nutcracker napkin rings at World Market last year. I love the moveable legs.
The kitchen shelf also received some happy Christmas touches.
The nutcracker garland was an easy project. Paper tags were simply hung on bakers twine with tiny clothespins.
This was the first year I tried my hand at growing paperwhites. I can’t wait for them to bloom. The bulbs were planted into antique glass molds.
The Family Room
The Nutcracker theme also continued in the family room.
The doxies, Rudi and Gracie, want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!
Next up on the tour is the delightful duo, Amy & Christy of 11 Magnolia Lane. I love how they combine gorgeous glamour with sentimental favorites.

Your Charles Dickens Christmas brought back many memories for me. I love the nutcrackers. I have three nutcrackers from Germany that were given to me by boss for Christmas many years ago. I treasure each one. The plaid Christmas ribbon spoke to my heart too as well as the carolers. You did a wonderful job with your old fashion Christmas and brought many memories back to this senior. It’s all so pretty but c’mon . . . the last pic of the puppies . . . THAT’s my favorite! I really like the plaid theme and the top hat on the tree – very clever! Also the wooden soldier theme in the kitchen and the way you carried it out from the table to the little banner with clothespins. Great job!

I love h ow you carried out the theme and colors, even down to the dog ensembles! The tartan is a wonderful look and each room is both beautiful and filled with love, personality and personal history, which I think is essential in Christmas decorating. It’s lovely, Laura, in every way.

Laura, your take on old fashioned Christmas is absolutely gorgeous. I love the apples on the garland going up your stairs, and the old fashioned toys under the tree, and everything else, too. Rudi and Gracie look so cute. I love all your garlands and your tree all dressed in plaid.Your nutcrackers all have so much personality. I know they are fun to collect. I only have one nutcracker my husband brought me back from Germany that is a skier and officially I think it is called a smoker.
