The Latest Kitchen FlooringTrends

It’s been a bit of a challenge for Mr. Decor and me to make a decision on what type of flooring we should select for the Storybook Cottage kitchen, laundry, family and powder room. There are SO many great options! The Latest Kitchen FlooringTrends.

The Latest Kitchen FlooringTrends

At the bottom of last week’s The Why’s of New Flooring post, I included a photo that featured a fairly new trend in flooring. The trend comprises the use of tiles in various shapes, material, and color within the same space.

This trend can also encompass tile being paired with wood or laminate flooring.

While wood laminate is a good choice for many people, others worry that perhaps it is not the best choice for “wet” rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Because of this, the popularity of “wood look” porcelain tile in kitchens is becoming a fast favorite for many homeowners.

I love it when such tile is laid in a herringbone pattern.

Ceramic Tile

For a traditional look ceramic tile has long been a popular choice. The trend today is to use larger squares such as those that measure 24” x 24” square or larger sized rectangles.

The natural and rustic trend in design is definitely in and terra-cotta tile is a good selection if you want to achieve such a look.

Terra cotta literally translates from Italian to English as “baked earth”. It truly adds warmth and character to a room.

Encaustic Cement Tiles

Another fast rising trend is encaustic cement tiles.

This tile trend seems to be the shining star all across blogland, home decor sites and magazines.

Brick

The use of brick as a flooring surface in a kitchen continues to be popular.

I do love the look but it is so unforgiving on a cook’s back or a dropped dish.

We definitely have our work cut out for us in trying to decide.

Next week, flooring looks I really love.

Ten years ago we replaced our hardwoods in our kitchen with limestone and travertine tiles after a malfunctioning pressure valve caused a small flood and ruined our hardwoods. Our kitchen is completely open to our family room so the tiles are “soldiered” against the hardwoods in the family room. For once I'm on trend….

I had brick floors one, look great so hard to clean and definitely hard on the back and feet. Can't wait to see what you choose. I absolutely love my new floors, they look amazing.

I am glad that I did my patterned cement tiles years ago before they became to trendy, but I still love them, and II kept the terra cotta in a clients kitchen that i just did because it was different! Love all of these!!

In a small house like ours where the kitchen, dining room and living room are all we have for living space and it's all connected and open, hardwood floors was the best option and I've loved them for the past several years now that we've had them. So easy to care for and pretty. 🙂

I love brick floors in the kitchen and wet areas. To me that is a look that absolutely never goes out of style. Can't wait to see what you choose. 🙂

That last picture is so beautiful. I wouldn't want to stand on a brick kitchen floor while working in the kitchen, but I sure would like to look at it!

I really love the concept of wood floors and if going tile, that wood look is great — hadn't seen that. But I do think tile is tough on the back… especially when you're doing long stints in the kitchen. I have to come up with something soon here, too so this is very timely for me!

As my eyes age, I find I need plain and simple and all one level. Many of the floors you've shown are beautiful but from this age forward, for me, it's all about safety.
