The Built-in Cabinets in the Living Room have finally been installed in the living room and we are quite happy!
Built-in Cabinets in the Living Room
Here is what we started with when we moved in. The design just didn’t seem to fit the space and the wood was also splintering and chipping.
A lovely local DTA reader, Sue of Ordinary Miracles, recommended that we try David Logan of New Creation Woodworking.
I provided David with a hand-drawn cabinet design that echoed the slight curve of the fireplace and wood storage area and he executed it brilliantly.
With this work completed, I am thinking that the brass fireplace screen and natural basket don’t quite work. I think they need to be lighter to create balance.
A quick spin around Pinterest and I found a few examples of what I have in mind.
I think it might be time for some high heat spray paint.
Do you think I should?

Great transformation!
I still love brass and gold. However, if it has to go…
I'll bet you can guess what my vote would be…
I want to see you paint it, paint it, paint it, paint it white……

Your fireplace is really beautiful! I love the brick and the arches. Your screen is also beautiful and I don't know if I would change it all. I would fill the place where the basket is with firewood. This has turned out so nicely – I would love to have this old brick in our home and am always trying to talk my husband into it! Beautiful, Laura!
love and blessings~

Terrific idea! LOVE your new built-ins! We are currently relocating to Texas and I am seeing alot of brick fireplaces that resemble yours….you've inspired me to look past some of the blandness of all of the brick. Beautiful job!

Oh yes, paint it white. The current screen was the one thing in the photo that didn't seem to quite fit, to me. Whatever you do will be lovely. The curve of the new cabinet really adds to the cohesiveness of your fireplace look. Great job, Laura!

Love the transformation! It ties in nicely with the fireplace and moulding. I definitely think painting the existing screen is a good fix
The candlesticks look lovely..

That looks gorgeous, Laura!! Very nice!!
And yes, I would paint the fireplace screen white. 🙂

Looks wonderful Laura! And although I love brass, I agree the screen doesn't work that well with your new cabinetry, I would try to find another one I would spray though since you might change your mind someday on the brass. Good luck!

Love the new cabinetry, and your thoughts on the screen and basket!!

Beautifully executed vision, Laura. I think I would start with the basket first – maybe put some birch bark logs inside and then see. I like the natural texture of the basket, and still like brass. Baby steps, I guess is what I'm saying, before the full commitment…..

Laura, the cabinet is fabulous and I love it. Absolutely perfect. Yep, I think a little spray paint will fix the screen and basket.

Your new cabinet looks perfect in the space. And it actually fits now! What a concept. lol (Wonder if the last carpenter ever managed to find his tape measure?)
The white screen will certainly brighten up the screen and a white basket will be nice as well. You certainly create magic with a bit of paint!
Thanks for sharing your lovely work. Hope you are enjoying your summer. 🙂

The cabinet is beautiful ~ what an improvement! Before you paint the screen I wonder if some birch logs in the log side would be good? I do agree that all the white and light is on the top and you need some on the bottom. I wonder if you could find an inexpensive screen to paint? Thanks also for the shout out, I guess I should update my blog with some of David's lovely work. He's done so many things for me!

The new built in looks like it really belongs here. The way it echoes the shape of the fireplace is brilliant.

I LOVE IT! This adds so much charm and character– it was executed beautifully. Great job, Laura! I hope you decide to spray paint the fireplace screen- it'd look amazing in white or a creamy white type of color.
