Hello dear friends! I am so very happy to finally share The DIY Home Planner Bathroom Reveal. We did it all, including decorating and accessories, for under $1,000.
The DIY Home Planner Bathroom Reveal
Mr. Decor and I started this light remodel way back in March.
We knew we needed to replace the yellowed laminate countertop and sinks, and refresh the rest of the dated elements.
From the getgo, the project began to go wildly off of the rails. We faced obstacles on every SINGLE thing that we wanted to do.
In addition, the spring rains and accompanying hailstorms arrived. It became evident rather quickly that Storybook Cottage needed a new roof ASAP. The bathroom was put on hold while we researched roofing companies, dealt with insurance and scheduled work and repairs to be done both on the exterior and interior of our home.
So now it’s almost three months later. With all the setbacks that we faced, I am amazed that we are even here. But I am so happy that we are.
Paint
Much has been said about the power of paint and I have to agree. All of the walls, trim, and cabinets received a fresh coat of white paint. In a room lacking in natural light the white paint brought a much-needed brightness to the room.
We saved money by just reinstalling the same brushed nickel hardware.
Mirrored Transom Window
It was absolutely impossible to remove the large existing mirror without causing major damage to the wall. So we needed to work around it. A simple update was created with my mad design skills and Mr. Decor’s install know how.
New Countertop
The most expensive update in the room was the custom countertop and sinks. It was 70% of our budget. But it was so worth it.
The new white countertop completely refreshes and updates the space in one fell swoop.
Lighting
Since we needed to save in other areas the rusted nickel light fixtures were simply sanded and painted. We swapped out the space age globes for simple glass globes more befitting the cottage look.
The globes were found on a ceiling fan that my neighbor was getting rid of. FREE and avoiding the landfill for the win!
Wall Cabinet
Now that the mirror is in line with the large wall cabinet the room feels balanced and complete.
We removed the cabinet doors, installed crown molding and corbels.
Trimming out the top of the cabinet was an exercise in patience to be sure.
The shelves were simply filled with bathroom necessities.
Flooring
Another area that we saved instead of splurged is a simple floor tile update that I wrote about HERE. The treatment is holding up beautifully!
Shower Curtain
I really wanted a floor to ceiling shower curtain. It was a bit disappointing to discover that the crown molding angled out in a way that prevented my initial vision. But the 96″ curtain overall still makes a dramatic impact.
Fresh white towels and simple accessories complete the look.
We’ve already had three sets of houseguests who have enjoyed the refreshed space.
To celebrate the reveal I am giving away two copies of The DIY Home Planner. One will be given away on the blog and the other on Instagram. Just leave one comment on either platform or BOTH for two chances to win this inspiring book.
The two winners will be randomly selected on Monday, June 4th.
UPDATE: The Random Number Generator has selected Nancy as the winner. Congratulations!
Questions? Leave a comment and I will happily answer.

Absolutely beautiful! I love the color scheme. You and Mr. Decor did a great job working with what you have.
Laura Ingalls Gunn says
A great question! I found two Tahari curtain panels sold as a set at HomeGoods for $16. I sewed the two panels together using the french seam method. It worked like a treat!
At Rivercrest Cottage says
Your room turned out beautifully! Love the trim your hubby completed in the room. Wondering where you found 96 inch shower curtains? Please add me to your giveaway list.
Anna Maledon says
I doubt you can buy 96-inch shower curtain anywhere. I believe it it is just a normal fabric curtain with white shower curtain underneath.
Laura Ingalls Gunn says
You can buy longer shower curtains on Amazon. I made this particular curtain.
Heather Strohl says
I love this! I have been brainstorming my own bathroom remodel. But, like you, other things keep getting moved up the list! It’ll happen one day 🙂
Linda Kelley says
It looks so fresh and clean, Laura. Really pretty! You’ve got me thinking about everything being white in our tiny bathrooms. We only have 2 bathrooms and they’re both much smaller than this one.
Thanks always for the inspiration.

Lovely! The mirror frame is completely genius. That alone takes the bathroom to high end design. The rest is beautiful, too, and is totally inspiring me to take another look at our bathrooms.

The transom windows over the large mirror~ love that idea!!!! Did you apply molding to mimic the look??? ( I almost said ”mirror the look of transoms!”~ HA!)
beautiful job~ your patience through the trials paid off!
Rita C at Panoply says

Laura,
You did a fantastic job designing and Mr. D did a fantastic job on the execution. The mirror and open cabinet fit together beautifully. Be still my blue and white loving heart. Your shower curtain and rug add just the touches of color needed to the white.
I am still working on my small updates in my master bath.

Wow!!! Your bathroom renovation turned out so beautiful! I love the white and blue. Clean, fresh and classic. The open cabinet is the perfect place to showcase necessities without a concussion causing set of doors. The mirror is quite the showstopper! What a clever way of hiding the huge wall mirror and giving it some character and class. Another perfect reno by Mr and Mrs Decor!
Bravo!!!! Thank you for sharing another peek into your sweet cottage. <3

Laura, this is a fabulous, real-world makeover! The bathroom is so much lighter and up to date. The shower curtain is beautiful! I love handmade shower curtains instead of the small store bought ones. The white countertop and changes to the mirror really made a huge difference. 🙂
mary says
This is SO worth all that hard work. Turned out beautiful.!
Donna says
Wow, everything looks fresh and charming! Paint does really make a difference. I especially love the crown molding and the framed mirror with the “transom” above the mirror. Nice job, hubs! The blue and white shower curtain is fabulous. I read the article on gutting mid-century houses and the comments were very interesting. The thing of it is, that anytime you “update”, it isn’t long before the decor is “dated”. I guess that is why I don’t follow trends, either in decor or apparel. Classic, baby, classic.

The mirror work is excellent! Love it!

There’s nothing about this bathroom redo I don’t Love! I would just stand in there and admire it all day. No windows?….Great idea to brighten it up with white paint. I think I hear my bathroom begging to be painted white.
